"Authorities" vs "roles"?

Federation Server uses both roles and authorities but authorities are
more granular than roles and can be delegable if allowed

roles are generally not delegable. Users can be included or excluded in
a role but the user is not able to self-remove or self-subscribe

authorities collectively or separately to different objects including positions, a role
or a user.
