Journey 7 · A current public-safety pilot scenario

An extended shift is more than a time entry

An extended shift can affect approval, rest, qualified cover and payroll preparation. Use this proposed pilot to agree the decisions a focused demonstration must prove.

Retrospective · Written 8 October 2026

One change, several responsibilities

Imagine an officer or firefighter scheduled to finish at 18:00 who remains at an incident until 21:30. The extra three and a half hours are easy to describe. The consequences are wider: who confirms the extension, which rules apply, whether rest affects the next assignment, and who must arrange qualified cover?

Follow the people involved

The person reporting the change supplies the facts. A supervisor reviews the operational reason. The staffing team considers the next shift and any coverage gap. Payroll needs approved information with the relevant context. These contributions are connected, but they are not interchangeable.

Keep the decisions distinct

An individual may hold the qualification needed for an assignment while the team still lacks the required mix of skills. A schedule estimate may help planning without being an approved payroll result. A visible request may need action without giving every viewer permission to approve it. A useful process preserves these distinctions.

Prove a focused pilot

This is a proposed pilot scenario for exploring connected operational work, not a claim that every step is already delivered end to end. Start with one organisation’s process, agree the applicable rules and test the responsibilities and outputs. The purpose is to establish whether a single operational change can lead to clearer, coordinated action across the people it affects.
